Will Apple Have a Netbook?

As big brands in the computing industry join in the netbook bandwagon, it is not surprising to find some sectors half-expecting, half-pressuring Apple to offer its own netbook on or before the end of 2009.

Company watchers have been predicting designs for Apple's still to be produced netbook. Some imagine a traditional design, while some expect a revival of the Mac Tablet, but substituting the stylus pen with the iPhone's multi-touch technology.

The speculation on an Apple netbook was given even more fuel with a report from Taiwan's Wintek Corporation, which said that is supplying 10-inch touch screens to Apple, and we all know that netbook LCDs are are from 7 inches to 10 inches in size. If Apple is indeed developing its own netbook, there may be issues to deal with.

Keyboard

Apple is mostly known for its touch screen keyboard. So it is no wonder many are wondering if Apple would go this route in its netbook, and opt for a 10-inch version of the iPhone's touch-screen keyboard. Of course, Apple might just go against its grain and opt for the undersized keyboards found on the current crop of netbooks.

Size

Apple really has three options when it comes to size:

build a 9-inch to 10-inch Mac netbook, miniaturize the tablet PC to netbook size, or simply build a larger iPod Touch with a 7-inch screen.

Operating System

Of course, the Apple would be running a variation of the Mac OS on its future netbook. The question is, will it be the full version of the Mac or a stripped own version like that found on the iPhone. By omitting some features of the Mac OS, we will be seeing a netbook with a very long battery life, but then, a full version can do so much more.

Storage

Apple has been using flash memory on its iPods and iPhones, so it will not be surprising if Apple will build netbooks with flash-based SSD drives. The question is, how much storage capacity will the Apple netbook be capable of? Flash memory helps reduce the physical size of netbooks as well as their power consumption. They are not, however, known for large storage capacity.

Connection

It is possible that Apple would incorporate 802.11n wireless networking in its netbook as well as USB port and Bluetooth. The real question is whether the Apple netbook will support 3G, which allows mobile devices to connect anywhere in the world where there is a phone signal. With 3G support, we might just the Apple netbook to be the most expensive in its class.

Intel Atom - The Reactor That Powers Netbooks & Nettops

Intel Atom's family of processors are unique. They were designed to be general purpose processors. Yet, the most important feature is the extremely low power consumption. Intel positions these processors for the Netbook and nettop devices.

Netbooks are a new category of portable laptop/notebook family. Manufacturers aim these lightweight devices for people on the move. Most important applications on the move should provide the ability to receive and send emails, IMs and surf the net. General purpose productivity applications are not that important, though they would be able to run these applications in a pinch. Typically, a 10" display and corresponding smaller size and weight sets these apart. The way Intel defines the Nettops as a category of devices aimed at content consumption rather than content creation such as, browsing web pages, watching online video streaming etc. They see it as the tool the next billion users would use. Besides these are aimed at consumer electronic devices, embedded systems and thin clients.

It is easy to see that this category is going to be very popular. The Netbooks are already almost everywhere. So much so, that for a two year commitment you can get these Netbooks for $99 kind of prices. The commitment is to use the 3G communication services from these mobile services providers. This is the kind of connection that gives you mobility and bandwidth for operation. It is not difficult to see that the power consumption is one of the most important considerations in designs of such mobile devices.

Power consumption, as define as TDP or thermal design power, ranges from 0.65 watts for Z500 to 8w for 330 family, 4 watts in the 200 family and 2.4w or 2 w for the Z530, Z520 and Z510 processors in the Atom processor variants. Compare it with something like 35/40 w in the X86 processors in regular PC products. The processors themselves and the transistors used to implement the processors are of very small geometrical dimensions. Intel uses 45 nm lithography technology. That leads to a very small package size of 13 mmX14 mm in most cases. The processors that have a TDP of 2.5, 4 and 8 watts come in a package size 22mm X 22 mm.

While the extreme small size helps in controlling power dissipation Intel uses other techniques that help reduce power further. One is to use very low core voltage to operate the transistor on the chip. This is in the range of 0.7 to 1.1 volt in case of the processors that dissipates up to 2.4 watts. Processors that have TDP ratings of 2.5 watts to 8 watts use 0.8 to 1.625 v for the 2.5 watt unit; and 0.9 to 0.1625 v for the higher rated processors. To top it all, a very sophisticated power control is used to keep the power consumption at a minimum. These techniques include not only external voltage control, Intel has taken it to the extent that parts of the system goes to sleep when even one of the two threads the processors are capable of enters an inactive state. To retain efficiency though the processor is capable of coming out of a sleep state really quickly.

Samsung NC10 Review

The Samsung NC10 was one of Samsung's first netbooks, and it really shook up the netbook market. The Samsung NC10 is available in both white and black and it is matted, which is great as it will pick up less dust and finger prints.

The build quality, being a Samsung, is impeccable and this is one netbook that won't buckle under continuous use.

The keyboard measures just 93% of a standard laptop, so although it is smaller, it is not tiny which makes typing fast and for lengthy periods of time very comfortable. The keys also have good spacing between them so that you don't accidentally hit more than one. Beneath the keyboard there is a small touchpad. The good thing with the touchpad on the Samsung NC10 is that the mouse buttons on beneath at like you would find on a standard laptop, unlike some netbooks that put the mouse buttons on either side of the touch pad.

It seems Samsung have listened to its customers, as they have fixed the issue with the netbook running a little hot, by improving airflow beneath and around the NC10. One of the most important aspects of a netbook, or any portable technology to be honest, is the battery life. It doesn't matter how powerful the machine, as if the battery is dead, you can not use it. Samsung have provided a six-cell battery on the Samsung NC10, which means that you should be able to squeeze the battery life just past 5 hours. There is a standard 1.3 mega pixel camera which can be used for video calls. The screen on the Samsung NC10 measures 10.2 inches, so it is not a tiny netbook like you will find from Asus. However, this is in line with consumer demand. It works with an Intel Atom processor, has 1GB RAM and 160 GB storage. This will be plenty for even the most avid user and will be more than sufficient.

The Samsung NC10 is a fantastic netbook and has a top-end spec and great aesthetics.

Using the Toshiba A65 Laptop - A Blessing Or a Problem?

Toshiba A65 Laptop is a nice venture of the Toshiba Company and has many qualities and features which other laptops usually don't have. It has a 15-inch display LCD, a fine 60GB hard drive, a good quality DVD/CD-RW drive, and 802.11b/g wireless mini-PCI card is also integrated in it. Some advantages of using this laptop model are as follows:

  • It is ideal for light processing of words.
  • It excellent for surfing the web.
  • It is great for mailing purposes.
  • It has warranty period of one year with free replacement of parts.
  • It is not very expensive.
  • Its battery takes less time to charge completely.
  • It has a very fast memory speed.

However, Toshiba A65 laptop has many disadvantages too. Some of them are:
  • It over heats in short time.
  • Dust clogs its heat sink.
  • It is a slow model of laptop for handling intensive graphic tasks such as games, etc.
  • It has partial or continuous battery charging problems.
  • The power jack is not well connected with the system's motherboard, so power problems persist.
  • Its memory is not very reliable and may fail any time.
  • Its mouse pad is super sensitive, so if touched accidentally, it causes problems during typing and editing text.
  • It has a poor quality of volume and sound.
  • It is not a smart notebook computer as it has more weight as compared to other laptops.

Therefore, Toshiba A65 Laptop is not a preferable choice for people, especially students as it takes more space than other laptops, so it's not convenient to take it with you during lectures and constitutes more disadvantages and problems than advantages and benefits.

How to Choose the Right Laptop For You

It's not a secret, nor a surprise that laptop sales are soaring. People are constantly on the move and there is an ever increasing demand for their PCs to be equally mobile. Just as purchasing a new desktop can feel overwhelming, choosing the laptop that's right for you can be just as difficult. We've put together a simple buying guide to help you navigate the sometimes tricky terrain of buying a new laptop.

Notebook computers come in all shapes and sizes, each with its own set of pros and cons. In the following article, we've outlined the most in-demand laptops currently on the market. Each section includes a user profile, what to expect, and the key features that make up the system.

  • Desktop replacement laptops
  • Ultra-portable laptops
  • Budget/Value-minded laptops

Desktop Replacement

With mobile technology progressing at such a rapid rate, it is more feasible to kiss your clunky desktop good-bye and instead, run your intensive games and multimedia applications anywhere your laptop may be. These laptops are typically pricey and a bit bulky, but they have more features than you'll ever need. You'll be hands deep in learning how to record live television, attaching gaming consoles, editing high-definition videos, and inventorying your entire music collection. Although it's still hard for a portable system to match a well-equipped desktop in terms of performance, the mobility advantages are undeniable.

Depending on your needs, a 15" to 17" sized panel is advisable, especially if you will be using this as your primary PC. Also, if you can afford the extra cost, a LED backlit LCD screen will translate into richer colors, improved contrast and even improved battery life.

In terms of expansion, it's important to consider if you'll be connecting to an external monitor and full-sized keyboard/mouse often. If this is the case, we recommend you look for a model that supports a docking station. For a desktop replacement, we don't recommend anything less than 3 USB ports to be built in the laptop casing.

Ultra-portable

If you're a student or traveling businessman, a 4-pound laptop is ideal for you. Ultra-portables defy gravity by integrating every laptop component into the smallest frame possible. Its slim form factor, light weight, and low-voltage processor make it ideal for those who need a thin and light road warrior. While these laptops tend to have smaller keyboards and smaller screens, they're still efficient enough to do word processing, emailing, and web surfing.

We have differentiated two ultra-portable systems: Standard and Performance.

The first describes a well-equipped laptop in the 11" to 12" range, usually characteristic of the Sony Vaio TZ and its competitors. These systems use low power dual core processors, integrated video and slower, smaller hard drives (so picking a 5400rpm HDD in this category can be considered a big plus).

Our performance ultra-portable spec, on the other hand, corresponds to the category that the Apple Macbook Air debuted not too long ago. You can upgrade power all-around compared to the standard ultra-portable spec, but these models are usually bit larger in size.

Most ultra-portable systems offer the option of wireless WAN connectivity, so you may want to check what the ISP offerings are in your area. If your ultra-portable will not have substantial load placed on it and you'd prefer the additional portability, it's worth taking a glance at netbooks.

Budget/Value-minded

If you don't quite need the most portable setup possible, then focus your attention here. Value-minded laptops appeal to anyone on a budget or anyone who would rather replace a laptop every year than suffer the wrath of repair centers. It's also ideal if you're new to computing and don't want to get caught up in anything too high end. However, keep in mind that they tend to be on the heavier side.

Often times, budget laptops suffer from poor quality LCD screens, where viewing angles are not too great and color contrast is well below par. LED backlit screens are reserved for more expensive models, so having at least some kind of hands-on experience with the laptop model you are buying is advisable.

There's a laptop out there for everybody, no matter what you're looking for. So think about what's most important to you-computing power, a complete set of features, long battery life, good looks, a small form factor, or a low price. Hopefully, this article has given you the essential information to find the laptop that's right for you.

What's So Great About the Dell Inspiron Mini 9 Netbook?

The Inspiron Netbook is Dell's first foray into the netbook segment of the market. A netbook can be thought of as a mini laptop. The netbook sacrifices some of the more powerful elements that can be found in a laptop, and instead focuses on compactness, user friendliness and power conservation.
Dell's competition includes the Asus Eee PC 901, the Asus Aspire One and MSI Wind among others. But the Dell mini has the competition smoked in terms of battery life, with a claimed battery life of around 4 hours.

The Inspiron Netbook is light, compact and made for the on-the-go lifestyle. It was made to perform the basic tasks of internet surfing, email and perhaps some word processing. It is not designed for users who require high processing ability.

The netbook is designed with basic functionality and cost effectiveness in mind. To this end, Dell, like its competitors, has used the less powerful Intel Atom and has cut size wherever it can. It is designed to connect wirelessly to the internet using wi-fi technology. This makes it perfect for students who require a device to take notes, surf the web on the go and even listen to music.

The Netbook is also very compact in its design. For example, you can purchase an 8.9" Netbook from My New Laptop. . As a comparison, the average laptop screen size is around 15".

The specs are not impressive, but serve the purpose. The Inspiron Netbook only comes with Windows XP, whereas most new laptops and PC 's today come with Windows Vista.

This is not bad news though, as the Inspiron Netbook runs well as long as you don't expect too much from it. For example, the Netbook will struggle to use Microsoft Outlook to its full capability. However, if you are an executive on the go, and just need a small device to handle the basics with long battery life, then the Netbook is your best bet.

An added benefit of the lower specs and operating system is the cost. The Inspiron Netbook is one of the most affordable Netbooks around and certainly cheaper than the vast majority of laptops.
It is not a good idea to use the Inspiron Netbook as your main computer system. If you require more than basic functionality, then it may be wiser to spend your money on a larger laptop.

Netbooks - Are They a Useful Business Tool?

Although Netbooks have become extremely popular because of their portability and cost, the question remains whether they are a useful business tool or just another expensive gadget that adds very little value. My own experience is that the netbook is exactly what the travelling worker needs as it is the perfect compromise between a laptop and a smartphone.

What exactly is a netbook? The term netbook is generally applied to laptops with reduced size screens (9" being quite common) and keyboards that are easy to carry around but importantly run a full operating system and have Internet access via WiFi or an embedded cellular modem. This combination of a full operating system, the Internet and portability gives mobile workers a powerful tool to let them work as if they were in the office from anywhere.

Netbooks that run a full operating system such as Windows XP provide the remote user with an environment where they can run their important applications. While the smaller screen and keyboard would be unacceptable for prolonged use at a desktop, a mobile worker is not using the device constantly and so is more than happy to trade portability for a reduced size screen and keyboard. By using the same operating system on the netbook as is used on office PCs and laptops, all applications can be rolled out to the Netbooks without any user retraining.

Connectivity to the Internet is one of the main selling points of netbooks, with the option to use WiFi, mobile broadband or fixed line broadband for access. Once connected to the Internet, a VPN (Virtual Private Network) can be used to provide access to the office network so that the Netbook can retrieve emails, open documents and run server applications. A VPN provides a secure link from the Netbook to the office network and allows the Netbook to operate is if it was physically in the office.

In summary, Netbooks are an extremely cost-effective and useful business tool providing mobile workers with a familiar environment that is easy to carry around. By adding VPN access to the office network, the netbook becomes an extension of the office network enabling workers to be productive from anywhere with easy access to all their important applications, files and mail.

Visit http://www.AccessMyLan.com to see how you can setup a VPN in minutes.

Acer - Paving the Way For the Netbook Generation

What is so cool about the Acer Aspire One netbook? What are the reviews saying and should you drop your cash on the counter to get one? These are all things potential customers are asking themselves when it comes to this new netbook device. First, let's take a look at the basics.

What exactly is a netbook? Netbooks are designed to be "cloud computers" more or less, which means less hardware and more power in storing information and applications in the clouds-or the internet in laymen's terms. For an increasingly mobile generation, this is a great idea. It's also excellent for an increasingly more wired and connected generation. People are hooked on mobile devices and they are becoming more popular every day. That is why computing devices like the Acer Aspire One are getting such a great response-people love small portable computing devices they can take to a café, take to work, take to the beach-you name it and the Acer Aspire One can go there. With just an 8.9 inch screen-it's easy to take anywhere you want it to go.

Another great thing about these netbooks is they often come at a much lower price than a typical laptop. This has to do with several factors, and the Acer Aspire One is a great example of this. For example, the One comes installed with a version of Linux that is open source and so, it is free of charge. This greatly reduces the price of the netbook since there is no included cost to license an operating system like, let's say, Windows XP. Although if you are in dire need of a Windows operating system you can make the extra hundred dollars or so to have it licensed and installed.

The Acer Aspire One is a great netbook for a few major factors. One thing that I personally never enjoyed about netbooks is their cramped keyboards. The Acer Aspire One feels like a real mid-sized keyboard you can feel comfortable typing on. This type of thing goes a very long way since typing on a ridiculously small keyboard can get old and annoying extremely quickly. I even returned a netbook-I got so sick of the keyboard (after two hours!) Luckily, the Acer Aspire One doesn't suffer from this problem.

A great added bonus of netbooks is their battery life. When you're on a smaller device you can power it more easily with less added weight-making it much more mobile. For example you won't have to haul around an AC adapter anywhere you want to access the internet on your Acer Aspire One, you can just rely on the battery to keep you going throughout the day. Some netbooks can go for as long as 4-8 hours on certain batteries. If you're a road warrior or constantly mobile you might want to look further into an Acer Aspire One for your mobile computing needs.

Everything You Want to Know About Netbooks

Netbooks are a class of laptop computers that are designed for wireless communication and access to the internet. They are primarily designed for web browsing and emailing. Netbook computers depend heavily on the internet for remote access to web based applications. They are targeted mainly at cloud computing users who require a less powerful client computer.

A netbook computer typically runs on Windows XP or Linux operating systems rather than intensive operating systems like Windows Vista. Netbook computer sizes range from being below 5 inches to over 13 inches and typically weigh around 2 to 3 pounds. They are much cheaper that general purpose laptops.

Regarding the hardware of netbook computers, the hardware used are that of Intel and ARM processors. The specifications and features of netbook computers continue to evolve, with much better processors coming in the market.

Regarding the software of netbook computers, like mentioned before Linux and Windows XP operating systems are used. Google's Android operating system has been demonstrated on Asus EEE netbooks and Mac's OS X has been demonstrated running on various netbooks too.

Netbooks cost around $250 making them a potentially disruptive and high-volume market segment. How far netbooks are going to be successful is a matter that needs to be decided by the consumers and manufacturers. Paul Bergevin, an expert in IT products, says that in the developing world, netbooks will attract first-time buyers. They will exist alongside cell phones as a means for people to connect to the Internet and communicate. The low price and practical functionality will bring millions of new people into the global web. He believes that this is driving a giant new wave of digital inclusion and enfranchisement.

While, in more mature markets, netbooks will become supplemental PCs and ready access points into the cloud of Internet services, media and information. The trend for netbooks is just beginning-it has just entered the market and is just beginning to take off.

The latest netbook models are Asus EEE, Hewlett Packard Mini (HP Mini) and Acer One. These models are great ones to use. They are light weight, are of reputed brands and have great features in them.

Now that you know more about netbooks, why don't you buy one and see how it functions. It would also make a great present for a computer savvy person. They don't cost as much as regular laptops and only have certain distinct features in them. Best of all, they have the internet connection which is the window to the outside world. So get ready to get yourself a netbook and enjoy its features. Don't forget to recommend them to your friends too. They make a great tool for gaining knowledge. So get a netbook and enjoy yourself.

How Long Do Laptop Batteries Last? And What Can You Do to Improve This?

Most people buy laptops because they want to be portable. They want to move around the house or work in coffee shops or the library. Unfortunately, you can't always get as much done as you want to, because you can't always find a place to plug them in. Luckily, laptops have batteries.

This isn't as good as it sounds though. The typical laptop battery (in a 14 or 15 inch laptop) is a 6-cell battery that lasts around 2 hours. They might last a little longer than that, or a little less. It depends on what you're doing. If you are pushing the laptop (watching DVDs or editing photos) the battery will drain faster. Just think about how you get tired faster when you run than when you walk.

Luckily, you're not stuck with that 2 hours. You have a couple of options.

First, you can always buy a second battery. Then, when you're about to run out of juice, just swap batteries. That will give you four hours.

Even better, you can buy a second battery that's a larger-capacity than your original battery. As I said, most batteries that come with laptops are 6-cell batteries. You can buy bigger cell batteries that will give you longer battery life. You can buy these extended batteries from the laptop manufacturer, whether that's Apple, Dell, HP, Sony, or whoever. They are more expensive, but they're a good way to get more work done while you're on the road.

Those are your main options, but there are manufacturer-specific options. For instance, Dell sells something called a modular bay battery. You pull out your optical drive (DVD or CD drive), and install this battery instead. Then you get longer battery life because your laptop has two batteries. The laptop uses the modular battery first, just in case you want to use your optical drive. That way you will get the most battery life possible, because the primary battery is not used until the modular bay battery is used up.

This just proves that each manufacturer is striving to improve in this area all the time. So always check out what your manufacturer has available to help improve your battery life. People keep talking about a revolution in this area, but for now, you have to think creatively to get the most out of your laptop.

Cover Up Your Ugly Laptops With Collegiate Laptop Skins!

A lot of students come into my store to buy laptops. They don't need anything too fancy. They just basically need something to write papers and surf the Internet. So it's always interesting to see what type of laptop they end up with.

Some people buy a cheap, ugly laptop that will do the job and others spend hundreds of dollars more just so that it will look nice. I'm not judging them. It's just interesting to point out.

Some parents won't buy a nice looking laptop for their kids though. They buy the cheapest laptop that will do the job. They don't care what it looks like.

If you are one of those students who has to make due with an ugly laptop, here's a way to make it a little nicer. Go online and look up laptop skins. These are big stickers that cover the top of your laptop.

You can get a solid color, or you can pick out a pattern or picture. They usually have a library you can choose from. This is a cheap way to make your laptop look a little nicer.

Here's another tip: A lot of the companies also allow you to design your own laptop skin. You can upload a picture of your own, and have that printed and sent to you. Maybe upload your school's logo and show your school spirit. Or upload a picture of your dog or a drawing by your favorite artist. It's up to you.

Just be careful applying the skin. You don't want air bubbles. Those look really tacky. Check out Youtube for some great tutorials. They will show you some tricks so that the skin is applied perfectly.

So don't worry if your laptop looks boring. You can give it a facelift in just a few minutes by just ordering a laptop skin of your choice! You may not have the nicest laptop in school, but at least it will be yours.

Those Portable Mini Laptops Can Be Your Main Computer!

Lots of people are buying the portable mini laptops, also called ultra-portables or netbooks, as second computers for traveling.

They use them on the road, but don't really like to use them all the time because the screens are so small.

Most of them have enough ports that you can use a big screen, big keyboard, and big mouse. Add an external hard drive, and you have a decent full-size computer.

Most of the screens are too small for regular viewing. Luckily, you can buy a 20" LCD for very little money. Plug it into the VGA port on the laptop, and use the big monitor when you're at home. You can even use your LCD TV as a screen if you want to.

The keyboards, especially on the 7-8.9" units, are very small. Many people have trouble typing comfortably on them. Unless you have tiny hands, you probably will too. Luckily, you can easily plug an external keyboard and mouse into the unit. It's much more comfortable to type on a full-size keyboard and use a full-size mouse.

Many of the portable mini laptops come with very small solid state hard drives. This is great while you're on the road, because these drives are less likely to break down. But you may not have enough room to save everything you need. So invest in a 500 GB or 1 TB external hard drive. That will give you plenty of room.

If you run out of USB ports, don't think you're out of luck. You can always buy a USB hub. This will give you more ports so you can do everything you want to do.

So don't think you're stuck with that tiny screen and keyboard. For not very much money, you can have the best of both worlds!
